Three simple, visual recipes that are easy to adapt for a Halloween night. Adjust quantities to match your number of guests.

Bloody Witch Fingers

A snack that looks frighteningly good

Bloody Witch Fingers

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 10 cocktail sausages
  • 10 sliced or whole almonds
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Ketchup or tomato sauce
  • Mustard (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F.
  2. Cut the pastry into strips about 2 cm wide and wrap each sausage, leaving one tip slightly exposed.
  3. Press an almond onto the exposed end to create a fingernail.
  4. Score a few shallow knuckle lines in the pastry.
  5. Brush with egg yolk and bake for 15–20 minutes.
  6. Add ketchup at the end just before serving for the bloody effect.
Stuffed Pumpkin

Roasted pumpkin, meat and melted cheese

Stuffed Pumpkin

Ingredients

  • 1 small pumpkin or squash
  • 300 g minced meat
  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 150 g mushrooms
  • 200 g grated cheese
  • 100 g cooked rice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 100 ml cream
  • Salt, pepper and herbs

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F. Cut off the pumpkin top and remove seeds and fibres.
  2. Lightly oil and season the inside, then pre-bake for about 20 minutes.
  3. Cook the onion and garlic, then add the meat and mushrooms.
  4. Stir in the rice, cream and half of the cheese. Season to taste.
  5. Fill the pumpkin, top with the remaining cheese and bake for another 25–30 minutes.
  6. Serve whole as a dramatic Halloween table centrepiece.
Graveyard Cake

An easy cake with a playful spooky decoration

Graveyard Cake

Ingredients

  • 200 g sugar
  • 200 g flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 sachet baking powder
  • 100 g melted butter
  • 100 ml milk
  • Vanilla
  • Orange food colouring (optional)
  • Rectangular biscuits
  • Gummy worms or spiders
  • Cocoa or crushed chocolate biscuits
  • Icing or whipped cream

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F. Whisk the eggs with sugar and vanilla.
  2. Add melted butter and milk, then fold in flour and baking powder.
  3. Bake in a rectangular tin for 25–30 minutes and leave to cool.
  4. Cover with icing, then cocoa or biscuit crumbs to resemble soil.
  5. Decorate rectangular biscuits as gravestones and press them into the cake.
  6. Finish with gummy worms, spiders and optional red jam for a bloody detail.
